Napa, the seat of Napa County, is a beautiful city in California and is one of the largest towns in the Napa County region. It is the second-largest city in the wine county of California after Santa Rosa.
The word "Napa" was derived from the name given to a Southern Nappan village. The city of Napa was founded in 1847 by Nathan Coombs. It was officially incorporated as a city in 1872. One of the main reasons for the expansion of Napa city was the Gold Rush in the 1850s in California. Several migrants sought shelter in the city from snow, floods, cold winters, and diseases, and these migrants were an assortment of people from Europe, Asia, and Native Indians.
Along with the Gold Rush, the Silver Rush that took place in the city in 1858 played a crucial role in catapulting Napa's growth and development. In the 1860s, silver mining began on a large scale, and many quicksilver mines began to operate that contributed majorly towards the city's development. The famous Napa leather was invented in 1875 by Emanuel Manasse, which started the manufacture and shipping of leather goods from the city.
One of the most substantial factors that led to Napa's development was the establishment of the South-North Chain missions, which was led by Junipero Serra. It connected 21 missions and four forts and led to the construction of highways, which contributed to Napa's growth immensely. The Napa Glove industry was set up in 1903, the largest plant of its kind in Chicago, which accelerated Napa's economic growth and progress.
The dawn of the 20th century saw the city grow tremendously as a business and economic center and establish the San Francisco and the Napa railroad and the Calistoga railroad, which started the freight and the passenger service. Initially, agriculture and wine industries were the primary sources of income and a significant part of the economy. But the city witnessed the growth and development in the banking, retail, and commercial industry slowly and steadily over the years.
The beginning of the 20th century witnessed the cultivation of boysenberry for the first time in the city of Napa. Napa's citizens began the manufacturing of apple cider, dried grapes to raisins, and started the shipment of eggs along with the other products to San Francisco. The electric railroad accentuated the trade activity and enabled convenient transportation of goods and people. The industry grew tremendously with ships and the Southern Pacific railroad, which enhanced the shipping of clothes and tannery products to San Francisco.
Napa boasts of the presence of two tanneries. One of the tanneries in the largest tanning establishment on the Pacific Coast includes the manufacture of drain-tile, brick-works, a fruit packing establishment, and a glue factory. The tannery consists of some of the most reputed wineries in the state and ranks as one of the state's largest. The wooden mill established in the city has a considerable reputation for manufacturing some of the most delicate fabrics. The city also has a company that has engaged in grape drying lately and involves in the shipping of various products.
