In Horry County, at the U.S. East Coast, Myrtle Beach lies in the state of South Carolina. The area stretches to "The Grand Strand" beach which is approximately 60 miles at the north-eastern side of the state.
TheWinyah Indians and Waccaw Indians are the first inhabitants who settled in Myrtle Beach. They had named the area "Chicora" which meant "the land." There was a thoroughfare which went through the Myrtle Beach that was called Kings Highway. It was constructed first as a trail by the Indians before the settlement of the Europeans in Grand Strand. Later on, it became a route to Savannah and Charleston from the states found in the northern side.
Explorers from Europe found it difficult as they tried settling in Grand Strand. In 1526, one of the first colonies was built by Spaniards Lucas Vasquez de Allyon in the Northern part of America. However, there was a fatal disease which ravaged the place within a year that caused the inhabitants to perish.
Later on, after the settlement of the European colonists, Myrtle Beach experienced a new introduction of its life and history. At the time, there was a sudden need of the exportation and importation of supplies plus goods via the ocean. The following led to pirates taking over the high seas during the 1700s. They mostly intercepted the cargo vessels and took the available goods that were being transported.
The coastal waters in South of Carolina suited best the pirates where they found they are more productive for them.As for the Grand Strand inlets and coves, they were preferred as hiding places which were great for the marauders.
Most of the beaches found in Horry County were always inhabited virtually. The following was because of the low economy and no access to the geographical site of this county. It was until the 1900s when the situation changed. As the century turned, a firm of turpentine and timber called the Burroughs &Collins Company that had holdings which were extended to the beachfront developed a resort in the Myrtle Beach.
In 1901, the Burroughs Company built the first hotel in MyrtleBeach, which was called Seaside Inn. During this time, the lots from oceanfront were sold at $25. For the buyers who aimed to get an extra lot, they decided to build a house which was valued over $500.
Myrtle Beach as previously recognized as Withers, Long Bay or Withers Big Swamp by the community, it was renamed to "New Town." However, it was renamed again by Horry Herald who decided to sponsor a content that was aimed in naming this particular area. His wife became the winner of the contest as she chose "Myrtle Beach" as its name. She did so because of the many myrtle trees which had wax and were widely growing aggressively at the shore.
During the 1920s, Arcady resort was built at Myrtle Beach by a businessmen group in the northern parts of the area. It included an International Country Club at the current Pines Lake. It's a home of the first Strand gold club as well as the magazine's birthplace.
There are several significant developments which continued taking place throughout Myrtle Beach during the 1930s and 40s. There was the opening of Intracoastal Waterway in 1936. It consisted of commercial shipping and pleasure boats. In 1940, there was the establishment of the Air Force Base. It was mainly used in training and performing of patrols at the coast during WWII. Later on, in 1993, the base became closed. In 1949, Myrtle Beach Pavilion was constructed while in 1954, there was an installation of the band carousel and organ which was historic.
In 1938 is when Myrtle Beach becameincorporated but it was officially named as becoming one of the city in South Carolina in 1957. Previously in 1954, there was a disastrous hurricane called Hurricane Hazel which had demolished the trees and buildings which were found along the shores of Grand Strand. Later on, in 1960, rebuilding began of new homes and hotels in the area. A hundred and fifteen golf courses were also built at the time.
Some of the famous attractions and places in Myrtle Beachcontinued to be opened as from the 1970s onwards. Such included the South Carolina Hall of Fames,Myrtle Beach State Park Pier, Murrells Inletand the Seafront Boardwalk.
